2025 SASSA Grant Amplification: Crucial Information Explained
In a move aimed at providing much-needed relief to millions of South Africans, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced increases to various social assistance grants for 2025. The increases, which range from 5.7% to 5.9%, are designed to help beneficiaries cope with rising living costs and the additional financial strain caused by the 0.5% VAT increase.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the grant increases during his Budget Speech on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The Old Age Grant, War Veterans Grant, Disability Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Foster Care Grant, Child Support Grant, Grant-in-Aid, and Older Persons Grant have all seen an increase.
The Old Age Grant, War Veterans Grant, and Disability Grant have been increased by R130 to R2,315. The Care Dependency Grant, Foster Care Grant, and Child Support Grant have been increased by R50, R30, and R30, respectively, to R1,230, R560, and R560. The Older Persons Grant (60-74 years) has been increased by R130 to R2,315, and the Older Persons Grant (75+ years) has been increased by R130 to R2,335.
The Grant-in-Aid, which is provided to organisations that care for people with disabilities, has also been increased by R30 to R560. However, the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) remains unchanged at R370.
These amounts reflect the government’s effort to help beneficiaries keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living, with a total allocation of approximately R284.7 billion for social grants in the 2025/26 financial year.
The grants are typically paid out in the first week of the month, with Older Persons grants paid earliest, followed by Disability grants, and then the Children’s and other grants. The official payment dates for April 2025 have not yet been announced, but based on previous years, beneficiaries can expect Older Persons Grants to be paid on Tuesday, 1 April 2025, Disability Grants on Wednesday, 2 April 2025, and Children's Grants on Thursday, 3 April 2025.
However, the agency faces uncertainty at the highest levels due to the suspended CEO and ongoing investigations into SASSA's administration. Furthermore, only 30% of the 3 million affected beneficiaries have successfully transitioned to the new black cards in the Postbank Gold-to-Black Card Migration, leaving 1.9 million grant recipients at risk of losing access to their payments if they do not switch before the deadline.
To apply for a SASSA grant, applicants must gather necessary documents such as a valid South African ID, proof of income or lack thereof, medical reports (for disability grants), birth certificates of children (for child-related grants), and submit their application through the online platform, in-person at a SASSA office, or through alternative methods (as of now, only online or in-person are available). Applicants will receive a letter of approval or rejection within 30 working days after submission, and if rejected, have the right to appeal the decision within 90 days.
Eligibility for SASSA grants varies depending on the specific grant, with detailed eligibility information available on the SASSA Services Portal. Despite the challenges, the increase in grants is a welcome relief for many South Africans who rely on these grants to meet their basic needs.

In light of the government's efforts to assist citizens, the finance minister has announced increases in various social grants, including the Old Age Grant, War Veterans Grant, Disability Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Foster Care Grant, Child Support Grant, Grant-in-Aid, and Older Persons Grant, as part of the 2025 budget. These grants have received incremental updates, with the Old Age Grant, War Veterans Grant, and Disability Grant seeing an increase of R130, among others.
The announcement of grant increases is a positive development for South Africans who depend on these resources for their basic needs, particularly given the ongoing challenges experienced by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the need to keep pace with inflation and increasing living costs. However, concerns regarding the agency's administration and the transition to the new black cards for processing grant payments remain.
