45 Schools Certified as Euregio Profile in German-Dutch Border Region
A total of 45 schools in the German-Dutch border region have been certified as Euregio profile schools since 2020, with three re-certified and three newly certified in 2022. The goal is to foster cultural, social, and economic sovereignty among students in the region.
The ceremony, held in Enschede, Netherlands, saw the Anne Frank Comprehensive School Havixbeck, Irene Sendler Comprehensive School Ahaus, and Technical College Ahaus in Germany, along with two Dutch schools, Twents Carmel College Oldenzaal and College Schaersvoorde Aalten, receive the Euregio profile label. To earn this distinction, schools must integrate the German-Dutch idea into daily life, offer neighboring languages for at least four semesters, facilitate student exchanges, and promote cross-border and intercultural awareness.
Primary schools aim to establish Dutch as a language of encounter, while vocational colleges and secondary schools integrate Dutch into their foreign language offerings to inform students about training and study opportunities in the border region. This initiative is part of an extensive educational cooperation between Germany and the Netherlands, coordinated since 2015 by an office in the Münster district government's school department.
With 45 Euregio profile schools since 2020, including the three newly certified in 2022, the border region continues to foster cross-cultural understanding and opportunities among its students. The re-certification of three schools demonstrates the sustainability of this initiative.
