66-Year-Old Texan Proves It's Never Too Late to Learn: Meet Servennia Wyatt

Meet Servennia Wyatt, a 66-year-old Texas man who is proving that it's never too late to learn. With the help of Literacy Lubbock, Wyatt is making remarkable progress in reading and writing, inspiring others with his determination.

Wyatt, who once struggled with literacy, is now reading and finishing books, boosting his confidence. His tutor, Beth Gilliams, has guided him from children's books to Texas history, logging over 100 hours of study. Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer even recognized Wyatt's achievement.

Wyatt's goal is clear: to read independently and eventually learn to use computers. Twice a week, he meets with Gilliams at the Mahon Library, their sessions evolving into a friendship. Since starting in February 2025, Wyatt has made significant progress, improving his reading skills, including recognizing sight words and sounding out new words.

Wyatt's journey serves as an inspiration, encouraging others to learn to read, as he believes if he can do it, anyone can. Literacy Lubbock continues to support Wyatt, helping him unlock a world of knowledge and possibilities.
