In a significant move, the Krefeld Adult Education Centre has announced that it will be offering free literacy courses for those seeking a deeper understanding of texts. These courses, led by the experienced Fehmer duo - Dieter and Angelika - have been a part of the centre for over a decade.

The courses, designed specifically for people with intellectual disabilities and learning difficulties, cater to a diverse range of ages, from 20 to over 50 years old. The courses are divided into two groups, one for advanced participants and another for those with very low reading and writing skills, including some who do not know any letters.

Dieter Fehmer guides the advanced course, focusing on literature such as "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Diary of Anne Frank". On the other hand, Angelika Fehmer leads the group with very low reading and writing skills, helping them to progress from knowing no letters to reading short words and sentences.

Both courses have a maximum of nine participants each, ensuring a personalised learning experience. Many of the participants have been using the alphabetization offer for years and attend a learning session after work in a workshop. The city of Krefeld's transportation service is available for their convenience.

The Fehmers believe in the lifelong right to education and cultural participation for everyone. They aim to help participants understand the world through these courses. This semester, the costs for participants in literacy courses at the Adult Education Centre are fully covered by the Krefeld Adult Education Centre's support association, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Peter Lensing, the CEO of the sponsoring company of the Volkshochschule Krefeld.

New participants are welcome to enroll in both courses, even mid-semester. The first two of 24 course units were taught in the first week of September, marking the start of this exciting opportunity for lifelong learning in Krefeld.
