Hawaii Hilo Vulcans Athletics Achieve Record-Breaking Academic Success

Hawaii Hilo Vulcans Athletics has set a new academic benchmark, with a record-high combined grade point average (GPA) of 3.32. This impressive achievement marks a significant year-over-year rise in academic performance, a trend that has been consistent over the past decade.

The record-breaking GPA surpasses the previous record-high of 3.28, highlighting the program's unwavering commitment to balancing athletic dedication with scholastic success. This achievement has earned many Hawaii Hilo student-athletes a place on the Academic All-PacWest Team.

Among the record number of student-athletes who earned this honour are four Vulcans: Mason Cook (baseball), Lauren Otsubo (softball), Cami Oyama (women's tennis), and Brandon Wada (baseball), all of whom achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Patrick Guillen, the 11th-year Hawaii Hilo director of athletics, praised the student-athletes' academic achievements, expressing pride in their ability to balance academic work, travel schedules, and athletic commitments. Guillen attributed the students' success to the support of coaches, academic advisors, and professors.

The Point Loma men's tennis team has the highest GPA among all teams, with a record of 3.86. Meanwhile, Hawaii Hilo's women's golf team holds the highest individual team GPA, with a record of 3.67.

In total, nearly 230 student-athletes across 12 sports teams achieved the record-high GPA. This impressive number includes a record 170 Vulcans student-athletes who earned Academic All-PacWest Team honours.

Guillen congratulated the students on another great year and looked forward to continued academic and athletic success in the future. The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans Athletics' academic excellence is a testament to the program's dedication to fostering well-rounded student-athletes.

The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans Athletics has not only achieved a record-breaking academic success, but also excels in sports, as evidenced by the impressive number of student-athletes who made it to the Academic All-PacWest Team.
