ACPS FY 2027 Budget: Enrollment Up, Public Input Sought
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is preparing for the fiscal year 2027 with a series of budget-related events and decisions. The School Board is set to determine the funding priorities before the school system finalizes the budget on June 11, 2026.
ACPS anticipates a slight increase in student enrollment, from 16,586 in FY 2026 to 16,711 in FY 2027. The budget for FY 2027 is expected to include significant personnel costs, with $8.9 million allocated for employee step increases and $2.9 million for a 1% market rate adjustment. Health care costs are also projected to rise, with an additional $3.01 million budgeted.
The school system has scheduled a public meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Alexandria City High School's Minnie Howard Campus. This meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to offer feedback on the FY 2027 budget. Additionally, Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt will present the proposed FY 2027-2036 capital improvement program budget on Thursday, Nov. 6, and the proposed combined funds budget on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026.
The final budget is expected to be passed on June 11, 2026, following a series of public meetings and input from the community. The school system also anticipates $1.5 million in non-personnel-related costs for the upcoming budget, demonstrating a balanced approach to funding ACPS's needs.
