AI in Teaching: Expert Warns of Responsibilities Amid Opportunities

Dr Sarah Younie, a professor at De Montfort University, has presented a paper on AI in teaching at UNESCO's Digital Learning Week. The paper, titled 'Promoting and Protecting Teacher Agency in the Age of Artificial Intelligence', argues that AI presents both transformative opportunities and profound responsibilities for global education systems. Education leaders and policymakers are encouraged to implement safeguards for AI's effective use in education.

Dr Younie highlighted the need for more research, particularly longitudinal studies, to understand AI's impact on education fully. The paper explores ethical AI use in education, emphasizing the importance of promoting and protecting teacher agency in the age of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the ETIH Innovation Awards 2026, celebrating excellence in global education technology, have been announced. These awards focus on AI integration and innovative learning solutions. Entries are open to organizations across the UK, the Americas, and internationally, with winners to be announced on 14 January 2026.

While the 2026 ETIH Innovation Awards details remain unavailable, the 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards have been announced. The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in Central London on October 16, 2025. As AI continues to shape the educational landscape, Dr Younie's paper serves as a timely reminder of the need for careful consideration and responsible implementation of AI in teaching.
