Article: Navigating the AI Age in Education: Ayo Jones' Three Shifts

At this year's Georgia Educational Technology Conference (GaETC), electric keynote speaker Ayo Jones shared her insights on the "Passport to Innovation" theme, advocating for a shift in mindset, skillset, and culture to effectively navigate the generative AI-influenced world in education.

Jones, a global educator and author, emphasized the need for educators to move beyond fear of AI and embrace it as a tool that can augment human connection and creativity. This mindset shift, she argued, is crucial for responsible and proactive integration of AI in the classroom.

In her "Three Foundational SHIFTs" guide to the AI Age, Jones highlighted the importance of cultivating an AI-ready mindset, teaching foundational AI-ready skills, and creating a thoughtful, intentional, and human-centered culture around AI adoption.

To foster an AI-ready mindset, Jones suggested starting conversations that reduce fear and build confidence in the ethical and purposeful use of AI. She encouraged educators to rethink their attitudes toward AI and feel confident about integrating it responsibly.

To prepare students for AI in the classroom without having AI tools, educators can embed critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving exercises into the curriculum. Jones also emphasized the importance of encouraging sequential reasoning by teaching students structured thinking processes that allow them to analyze and synthesize information critically.

Jones proposed a cultural shift towards a culture of thoughtful technology use, emphasizing human connections, ethical considerations, and legacy-building through AI-enhanced learning. She suggested beginning with small, intentional integrations of AI tools while preparing students to question, validate, and understand AI outputs critically.

The journey of adopting AI in education, according to Jones, is a process of many small steps, starting with professional development for educators. She argued that the adoption of AI needs to happen on a large scale, not just at the level of a principal or superintendent.

Jones' family history has inspired three key ideas she calls "The Three Foundational SHIFTs," which form the heart of her SHIFT System guide to the AI Age. The second SHIFT is to See through Intentional Perception, encouraging educators to rethink what the use of AI in the classroom looks like to avoid the perception of cheating.

The third SHIFT is to Iterate through Forward Motion, proposing a three-step conference gameplan for making the most of networking events. Jones emphasized that educators have the ability to leave a profound and lasting legacy in their classrooms and professional lives.

Experts believe that the tides of generative AI influence in everyday life have already hit shore, and education is behind in AI adoption compared to the business sector. However, with intentional shifts in mindset, skillset, and culture, educators can lead students safely and meaningfully into the Intelligence Age.
