AI Model from UNITE Can Identify Deepfakes Regardless of Face Usage

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to add trillions to the global economy by the end of this decade, but it's also becoming a significant tool for cybercriminals. Deepfakes, manipulated images, videos, or audio recordings generated using AI, are causing confusion and spreading misinformation. To combat this, researchers from UC Riverside and Google have developed a new AI model called UNITE.

UNITE addresses the problem of deepfakes and video tampering by analysing entire video frames rather than focusing solely on faces. Unlike traditional detectors that rely mainly on facial recognition, UNITE detects subtle spatial and temporal inconsistencies across faces, backgrounds, and motion patterns, enabling it to identify complex forgeries, including fully synthetic videos without human subjects or faces.

The model uses a transformer-based deep learning architecture with a multi-head attention mechanism, allowing it to process sequential video data comprehensively. It incorporates a novel training approach called attention-diversity loss, which forces the model to monitor multiple visual regions within each frame. This prevents the system from concentrating only on faces and helps it detect tampering in backgrounds and other scene elements.

UNITE draws on a foundational AI framework called SigLIP to extract features not tied to specific persons or objects, making it a universal detector capable of flagging a wide range of forgeries—from simple face swaps to entirely AI-generated scenes. The model can identify full-frame manipulations, cover complex background modifications, and detect subtle cues often missed by earlier systems, making it effective even when faces are absent or obscured.

By examining full video frames for spatial and temporal anomalies, UNITE significantly advances video authentication and combats misinformation. It provides tools for fact-checkers, newsrooms, and social media platforms to verify video authenticity.
