André Simon Awards 2021 Shortlist: Four Drink Books Tackle Global Issues
The André Simon Food & Drink Book Awards 2021 has revealed its shortlist, featuring four exceptional drink books that tackle global and environmental issues in innovative ways. The nominees include 'Wines of the Rhône' by Matt Walls, 'The South America Wine Guide' by Amanda Barnes, 'Inside Burgundy' by Jasper Morris MW, and 'Foot Trodden' by Simon J Woolf & Ryan Opaz.
Chair Nicholas Lander praised the nominees for their originality and inspiration. The panel was guided by independent assessors Rose Murray Brown MW for drink books and Yemisi Aribisala for food books. The André Simon Memorial Fund, founded in 1978 to honor André Louis Simon, recognizes outstanding food and drink literature.
Brown highlighted the diversity and depth of the wine titles, finding it challenging to narrow down the list to just four. Past winners include Oz Clarke, Elizabeth David, Michel Roux, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Nigel Slater, Rick Stein, and Hugh Johnson. For Burgundy-lovers, Brown recommended the new edition of 'Inside Burgundy' as the most authoritative guide to the region. She also commended 'Wines of the Rhône' for its enormous scope and focus on lesser-known appellations and great value tips.
