APIs Under Siege: Thales Report Warns of Data Targeted Attacks

Cybercriminals have set their sights on APIs, with data being the most sought-after asset, according to a new report by Thales. The 'API Threat Report (1st half of 2025)' reveals a staggering 37% of API-based attacks targeted data. The report, based on real-world data from over 4,000 environments, also highlights the growing threat of bot attacks, with bots accounting for 44% of advanced bot activity.

APIs, integral to modern business, facilitate software communication. However, this dependence has made them a prime target. In the first half of 2025, over 40,000 API-based cyberattacks were detected across 4,000 environments. The Threat Research Team at Thales warns that API-based attacks can generate application-layer distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, reaching an alarming 15 million requests per second.

Businesses are in a race against time to bolster their defenses. The increasing sophistication and frequency of cyber threats demand urgent attention to API security. The rise of bot attacks, now making up 44% of advanced bot activity, underscores the need for robust countermeasures.

The Thales report underscores the critical role of APIs in modern business and the urgent need to strengthen API security. With data being the prime target and bot attacks on the rise, businesses must prioritize their defenses to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.
