ASU Staff Arrested by ICE Agents, University Urged to Condemn Incident
Arizona State University (ASU) staff member was recently arrested by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents, with the university's police department involved. The staff member was later released.
The arrest occurred after an anonymous tip led to questioning. ASU spokesperson Jerry Gonzalez confirmed the incident. The staff member was taken into custody by multiple plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, including a special agent from Homeland Security. The arrest was forceful, with agents twisting the staff member's wrist and kneeing them in the back.
The ASU chapter of the National Lawyers Guild has since called on the university and President Michael Crow to publicly condemn the incident. They also urged the university to end cooperation with ICE and implement protective policies for staff and students. The staff member was arrested during a meeting with ASU police officer James Quigley, under the guise of discussing a social media post. Notably, no connections between James Quigley and DHS or the U.S. Secret Service were found in public search results.
The staff member was eventually released following the controversial arrest. The incident has sparked calls for ASU to review its cooperation with ICE and ensure the safety of its staff and students.
