Baden-Württemberg Bolsters Ties with Switzerland, Unveiling New Strategy

Baden-Württemberg is bolstering ties with Switzerland, with a new strategy adopted on July 8, 2025. The updated plan aims to deepen cooperation in economy, science, technology, and sustainability, while also fostering democratic partnerships.

The updated Switzerland Strategy provides a political framework to drive cross-border cooperation. Key areas include deepening economic, scientific, and technological ties, particularly in Artificial Intelligence. State Secretary Florian Haßler highlights Baden-Württemberg's bridge function between Switzerland and the EU, and the significance of Switzerland's participation in Horizon Europe.

To expand sustainable mobility, the High Rhine Railway is being fully electrified by 2027. This will enable a continuous express connection between Basel and St. Gallen. Additionally, both regions are driving the development of a hydrogen economy, with a pipeline being built along the High Rhine to connect to the Swiss network.

Minister President Winfried Kretschmann emphasizes the importance of the partnership, citing shared Alemannic culture and European values. The strategy aims to further strengthen and expand cross-border economic, labor, and living spaces. It also focuses on democracy and civil dialogue, with democracy conferences and cross-border participation formats strengthening political exchange and involving civil society.

The Baden-Württemberg cabinet's adoption of the updated Switzerland Strategy on July 8, 2025, signals a commitment to further cooperation with Switzerland. This includes deepening economic and technological ties, expanding sustainable mobility, and strengthening democratic partnerships. Both regions stand to benefit from this enhanced collaboration.
