Bamberg's 'Parents-Understand-School/Kita' Project Bridges Cultural Gaps in Education
Bamberg's 'Parents-Understand-School/Kita' project, co-funded by the Dr. Robert Pfleger Foundation and the city and district of Bamberg, is bolstering communication between educational institutions and parents with a migration background. Since 2019, this well-established initiative has been successfully bridging cultural gaps in the region's education system.
The project, a cooperation between education offices, migration social services, and the migration advisory board, aims to facilitate successful communication between schools, kindergartens, and parents with a migration background. Volunteer mediators, proficient in eleven different languages, will be available from the 2025/26 school year to support this effort.
In summer 2025, ten volunteers qualified as culture and language mediators. They acquired knowledge about the Bavarian school system, kindergartens, and intercultural communication. These volunteers will strengthen communication, especially during crucial parent-teacher conferences or evenings, helping to overcome cultural differences and reduce misunderstandings.
The 'Parents-Understand-School/Kita' project, with its team of 36 volunteers, is set to further enhance the educational experience for families with a migration background in the Bamberg region. By fostering understanding and effective communication, the project continues to make a significant impact on the local education landscape.
