Breaking Ground on a New Future: Magdeburg's IGS "Willy Brandt" School Redesign

Mayor Simone Borris marked a significant milestone yesterday with the groundbreaking ceremony of the upcoming school redesign for IGS "Willy Brandt" at University Square, accompanied by Thomas Kolley and Volker Huber from the general contractor Goldbeck.

Student bodies, school management, and other esteemed guests gathered to celebrate this milestone, placing a time capsule within the foundation stone filled with mementos from the school's history.

The construction project, projected to cost 70 million euros, will be entirely funded by the city of Magdeburg, with a predicted completion in summer 2027.

"Today, we're not just laying the foundation for the new building of IGS, but for a place that will offer young students a modern and spacious learning environment," Mayor Borris commended during the ceremony. "Investing in our schools means investing in the unity of our city, which resonates with the values of Willy Brandt, the school's namesake.*"

With a gross floor area of around 22,700 m², the new school will feature 62 general classrooms and 27 specialized classrooms, along with a canteen, kindergarten area, 3-field sports hall, and outdoor sports facilities.

The outdoor area will offer several small schoolyards, green spaces, trees, and modern design elements, while indoor facilities will include multifunctional common areas for each grade, sports halls, and playgrounds for recreational activities.

The school's convenient location, in the heart of Magdeburg with excellent public transportation and adjacent to the Otto von Guericke University, will enable partnerships between the IGS and university to strengthen MINT subjects and digitalization competencies.

Prior to the selection of Goldbeck Nordost as the project's general contractor, the city council passed a resolution for the IGS "Willy Brandt" construction, following a European-wide tender.

Within the school building, students can look forward to a dynamic environment tailored for future all-day operation, featuring modern design, staggered heights, ample bicycle parking spaces, and a playful layout that includes a small sports field, table tennis tables, and seating areas for breaks.

So buckle up, Willy Brandt students! Your new stomping ground is on its way to becoming a hub of learning and growth. Keep an eye on the construction process – it's shaping up to be a showstopper!

"The new IGS 'Willy Brandt' school, when completed, will provide a modern and spacious environment for education and self-development, fostering a dynamic learning atmosphere."

"The upcoming school redesign not only aims to offer improved educational facilities but also strives to cultivate partnerships with the Otto von Guericke University, thereby strengthening the students' knowledge in MINT subjects and digitalization competencies."
