Bomb detonations and a bomb warning: the ordeal faced by IGS Osthofen students

In the small town of Osthofen, Germany, the International Gymnasium School (IGS) has experienced a series of unsettling incidents over the past year. False alarms and bomb threats have disrupted the peaceful learning environment, causing emotional distress, operational challenges, and resource strain.

On September 25-26, 2022, the school received an email bomb threat overnight. The threat was serious enough to prompt the immediate evacuation of students and teachers. The Worms Criminal Police were involved in the response, deploying a large number of officers, including those armed with machine guns and special forces. Fortunately, the alarm turned out to be a false alarm, likely triggered by a student.

This incident followed a string of false alarms in January 2022, during which around 900 students found themselves in their classrooms when an alarm was triggered. On January 19, a particularly intense response occurred, with a significant police presence responding to the alarm. Despite the reassurances, the person who triggered the false alarms in January remains unidentified.

These incidents have had a profound impact on the school community. Emotional and psychological stress is a common consequence, with many students, such as 18-year-old Denise Rosato, feeling scared and anxious during the false alarms. Some younger students were even scared enough to cry.

The disruption of learning is another significant impact. Evacuations and lock-downs mean valuable instructional time is lost, affecting academic progress and focus. Denise and her classmates, along with many other students, continued to discuss the false alarms for days after they occurred.

The repeated false threats have also eroded trust in the school's safety protocols, making students and teachers feel vulnerable. A decreased sense of safety is a common sentiment among the school community, despite reassurances from authorities.

The operational burden on teachers and school administrators has also increased significantly. Managing emergency responses, communicating with authorities, and addressing the concerns of students and parents adds to their workload and stress.

Moreover, repeated calls to emergency services for false alarms strain local police, fire departments, and emergency responders, potentially diverting resources from real emergencies.

Finally, the negative school atmosphere contributes to an overall atmosphere of unease and disruption, affecting morale and the school community’s cohesion.

In response to these incidents, the teachers held a discussion about the false alarms and analyzed their experiences to improve their emergency response plan. Social workers at the school were also instrumental in providing support to students and staff in the days following the false alarms.

The Worms Criminal Police are currently searching for the person who sent the bomb threat in September. As the school community continues to navigate these challenging times, they remain hopeful for a return to a peaceful, secure learning environment.
