China, Russia Absent as Israel-Iran Conflict Ceasefire Holds

The Israel-Iran conflict has been ongoing, but two of the world's major powers, China and Russia, have remained largely on the sidelines. Their absence, despite historical interests in the region, requires explanation.

China, one of the three great powers, has condemned Israel's actions but has not actively engaged in the conflict. It has been more focused on its East Asian objectives, deeming the Middle East less critical to its security. Russia, despite its historical partnership with Iran, has also been largely absent. President Vladimir Putin initially expressed interest in mediating in June 2025, but ultimately prioritized direct negotiations with the US over involvement in the conflict. Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions have further distracted it from the Israel-Iran conflict. The lack of strong opposition from China and Russia has potentially opened up greater freedom of action for the US in the Middle East.

The Israel-Iran conflict has seen a ceasefire since 24 June, providing a chance to assess the minimal involvement of China and Russia. Their absence, driven by domestic priorities and strategic calculations, may indicate a shift in global power dynamics and potentially more room for US influence in the Middle East.
