Contestants Engage in Government-Oriented Reality Show Challenge
In a unique collaboration, more than a dozen residents from Golisano Children's Hospital took part in an Apprentice-style challenge on Aug. 7, creating 30-second public service announcements (PSAs) for the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester.
The friendly competition was judged by Monroe County District Attorney Michael Green, with both teams winning and earning donations in their honour. The videos, aimed at recruiting teenagers to get involved in the Boys & Girls Club and promoting the annual garage sale, were well-received by Dwayne Mahoney, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club, and Shawn Brown, other club representatives.
The hospital's involvement in this project was part of its Pediatric Links with the Community (PLC) Program. This initiative is dedicated to collaborative efforts among pediatricians, community leaders, and pediatric trainees, with the mission to improve the health and well-being of children in the Rochester community.
The PLC Program helps create a model of pediatrics in which pediatricians work with community-based organisations to assure the health of all children and advocate for their needs. All pediatric residents at Golisano Children's Hospital participate in a two-week community-based rotation as part of their training, while some residents participate in the Child Advocacy Resident Education (CARE) Track, which includes an intensive two-week community-based rotation.
Through the PLC Program, the hospital extends its services directly into communities, focusing on equity, quality, and innovation in pediatric care, particularly for vulnerable populations within the Finger Lakes region and beyond. The program also helps to coordinate resources and advocate for children’s health needs, aligning with Golisano’s institutional goals to transform pediatric care via targeted community partnerships and engagement.
The Boys & Girls Club appreciated the efforts of the residents in creating the videos, and the PLC Program continues to focus on service, child advocacy, and related evaluation as it works to strengthen the connection between pediatric healthcare and community supports. By facilitating access, advocacy, and comprehensive care for children outside the hospital environment, the PLC Program effectively impacts community health and aligns with the hospital’s overall impact on addressing social needs, promoting health equity, and improving outcomes for children in the region.
