How to Play Wordle

Wordle takes place here on the New York Times website. A fresh puzzle arrives every day at midnight, local time.

Begin by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of your word will turn green if they're correct and in the right spot, yellow if they're correct but in the wrong position, or gray if they're simply not found in the day's secret word. Remember ETAOIN SHRDLU, the old typesetters' phrase? (Pronounce it "Edwin Shirdloo" for a friend-like recall!) Among this mnemonic, three common letters appear today. One is pretty much a staple, and the other is moderately common.

Yesterday's Wordle Answer

Yesterday's Wordle was on the easier side. The hint was related to a pursuit, and the answer included four common letters and one fairly common letter.

The answer to yesterday's Wordle was CHASE.

Wordle Basics Explained

The goal in Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. When you first enter the game, you'll see an empty grid of letters waiting for you. It's up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can interpret the colors revealed to guide your efforts: Green means you nailed the letter and its position. Yellow indicates that the letter is present in the word, but not in the spot you guessed. Gray signifies that the letter isn't in the solution word at all.

Make a new guess, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before running out of guesses. You get six attempts, and then the game is over.

Best Words to Start with

What should you play for your inaugural guess? Words with common letters tend to be the best choices, as they give you a better chance at landing yellow and green squares to help steer your guesswork. The New York Times' Wordle analysis bot recommends starting with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis suggests starting with some of these for the most elimination possibilities in the first round:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Other excellent picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO have more vowels, but you could argue that a focus on consonants in your initial choices (such as RENTS or CLAMP) gives you a better edge.

Winning at Wordle

The key difference between Wordle winners and losers? Winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. For example, if you know the word must end in -OUND, don't waste guesses like MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, or HOUND. Instead, combine those consonants and guess MARSH, and see if the "H" lights up in yellow. If it does, then you've nailed the solution!

One more strategy tip: the original Wordle used a list of around 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes these words are slightly tricky and wouldn't be in the original list, and sometimes they're topical, like FEAST on Thanksgiving. Keep that in mind as you play!

Wordle Alternatives

If you just can't get enough of the Wordle formula, there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy your craving! Here are the best ones, graded by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, which allows you to play one puzzle after another.
  • Dordle and Quordle, which challenge you to solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at once, with the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.
  • Waffle, in which you solve several five-letter words scrambled in a grid by swapping letters around until you solve.
  • Absurdle, where the solution changes after every guess, but it must stay consistent with the previous feedback. You have to subtly trap it in a corner until there's only one possible word left; then you guess it, and win.
  • Squabble, where you play Wordle against other people while a timer is running. You suffer damage if you take too much time between guesses. The last one standing wins!
  • Antiwordle, in which you try not to guess the day's solution. Instead, you're required to reuse any letters that you guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you play!
