Design Council to Host October Webinars on Design Code Pathfinder Programme
The Design Council has announced a series of webinars scheduled for October 2024, as part of the Design Code Pathfinder Programme. These online events, taking place between 14.00 and 15.30, will be hosted on the Design Council's website and are open to all local authorities interested in developing and implementing design codes.
The webinars, set for October 8, 15, and 22, will offer a unique opportunity for participants to gain insights from local authority Pathfinders and other key stakeholders as they reflect on their experiences in developing design codes. Speakers for the sessions include representatives from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Trafford Council, BPTW, Bradford Council, Mansfield Council, the Lake District National Park Authority, Medway Council, and Edward Hobson, Director of Partnerships at the Design Council.
The webinars will cover a range of topics, with a focus on creating and implementing design codes and standards, national design guidance, practical approaches to improving local design quality, collaboration between planners, designers, and communities, and innovations in design policy and practice to enhance place-making. Topics to be covered include resourceful coding, making design codes work for development managers, and unlocking potential through design codes.
In addition, each webinar will include a Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the speakers and ask questions about their experiences and the design code development process. For those who cannot attend the webinars live, recordings will be made available on the Design Council website for viewing at a later time.
The Design Code Pathfinder Programme is an initiative aimed at improving the design quality of new places by developing design codes as part of planning and development processes. It seeks to raise standards and embed good design practice early on in local planning through collaborative, standard-setting efforts such as the National Design Review Charter. The programme is run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government in partnership with the Design Council.
These webinars aim to address concerns about unfinished developments and the revival of abandoned buildings in cities by providing local authorities with the knowledge and tools they need to create effective design codes that will lead to better, more sustainable, and more attractive places. For more information about the webinars, including the exact topics covered, please visit the Design Council's official website or check their announcements closer to October 2024, as such specific program details are typically released on those platforms.
