District of Fresno Schools readying for arrival of approximately 70,000 students
The Fresno Unified School District is gearing up for the 2021-2022 school year, welcoming over 70,000 students across its 106 schools. As the new academic year approaches, parents are encouraged to update their contact information and download the district app, "Parent Square", to stay informed and connected to their child's school.
Academic improvement and student success are top priorities for the district. To strengthen college and career readiness, Fresno Unified is focusing on initiatives like dual enrollment programs. These programs enable students to earn transferable college credits at no cost and gain early exposure to college-level coursework. This is part of broader efforts to improve academic outcomes across the Fresno-Madera region, supported by collaborations such as the Fresno-Madera K-16 Collaborative.
Safety is also a top concern for the district. Events like "Walk, Bike & Roll to School" are being implemented to promote safer, more walkable routes for students. These events involve law enforcement escorting students along safe routes to their schools and aim to encourage physical activity and environmental awareness.
In addition to academic and safety measures, Fresno Unified is committed to providing support services for students. Partnerships with community organizations like the Fresno County Department of Public Health and nutrition programs (e.g., CalFresh Healthy Living) indicate a holistic approach to student well-being during the school year.
Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto is reminding everyone to be extra cautious behind the wheel when driving around schools. She advises against stopping on the roadway to allow passengers to exit the vehicle, as it can lead to collisions and endanger children. Casto also urges parents to follow the school's traffic plans in place.
The district has counselors and staff in the department of intervention and prevention to assist students. Support is available for students and parents experiencing challenging times within the district.
