Duisburg-Essen University stands atop the CEWS rankings, securing its position as a leading academic institute.

The University of Duisburg-Essen has made significant strides in promoting gender equality within its academic community, according to recent data. The institution is among the top seven out of 79 evaluated universities in the CEWS ranking for gender equality, which assesses universities based on various gender equality metrics.

The university's progress is evident in several key areas. In 2023, the number of professorships stands at 480, with a share of women in professorships at 31.04%, an increase from 25.16% in 2018. The university is also in the top group in the categories of promotions, post-docs, full-time scientific staff, and the increase of this staff compared to 2018.

Moreover, the university has seen an increase in the representation of women in junior professorships and full-time scientific and artistic staff below the lifetime professorship. The number of junior professorships from 2021-2023 is 64, with a share of women at 53.13%. The share of women in full-time scientific and artistic staff below the lifetime professorship in 2021-2023 is 48.76%, an increase from 44.52% in 2018.

The university's efforts to promote gender equality have also had a positive impact on the number of promotions. A total of 1519 promotions took place at the University of Duisburg-Essen, with a female share of 45.75%. Among those who are promoted, it is 46.40 percent female.

The university's Rector, Prof. Dr. Barbara Albert, has stated that the excellent performance confirms that their measures to promote and attract women in science are working. However, the ranking sees room for improvement for the University of Duisburg-Essen in the overall proportion of women among professors.

Half of the students at UDE are female (50.16%), indicating a balanced gender distribution among students. The share of women in habilitations after promotion from 2021-2023 is 42.27%.
