Duke University's Basketball Team Isn't Exclusive in Generating Headlines-Inspect Their Renewed Law School

Duke University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina, has updated its audiovisual teaching systems in four locations, including three lecture halls and a moot courtroom. The institution's AV team opted for the latest Extron products, such as the NAV Pro AV over IP, for the upgrade, resulting in increased system reliability.

The NAV Pro system allows content to be routed to multiple rooms for overflow, using AV over IP to provide more flexibility and scalability compared to the previous point-to-point setup. The new setup offers full streaming and production capabilities from a broadcast-quality control room, and the AV staff can manage the system remotely from anywhere with internet access. The touchpanel user interface maintains a familiar feel, making the transition smoother for users.

Miguel Bordo, Manager of Instructional Technologies Consulting at Duke University School of Law, commended the installation, stating it was the smoothest he had experienced in his 18 years at the university. He noted that the AV over IP topology delivered more capability and easier scalability compared to the legacy AV system.

The upgraded lecture halls and courtroom share a common AV system design. PTZ cameras, guest laptops, Blu-ray players, and Apple TV devices feed into the AV over IP network via NAV encoders. The rooms are equipped with projectors and flat panel displays, streamed from the AV over IP network using NAV scaling decoders. The NAV decoders also transmit AV content to Duke's Panopto enterprise platform for recording and sharing lecture videos. Additionally, a MediaPort 200 scaling bridge connects a conferencing PC running a UC soft codec to the AV over IP network for teleconferencing. The rooms are equipped with 12" tabletop TouchLink Pro touchpanels and IPCP Pro xi control processors, enabling users to control the AV system and room lighting.

Duke Law School has a long history of producing in-house AV media since the 1990s and possesses a sophisticated infrastructure for creating, disseminating, and archiving media. This latest refresh is part of Duke's ongoing initiative to maintain up-to-date and reliable AV infrastructure.

The benefits of AV over IP solutions in lecture halls and courtrooms include enhanced scalability and flexibility, improved interoperability between devices, and increased potential for remote monitoring and management. These solutions can also offer interactive and dynamic content to improve the learning experience and accommodate various courtroom configurations. While Duke University School of Law is not specifically mentioned in the search results discussing AV over IP solutions, these benefits generally apply to institutions seeking to modernize their AV equipment.
