ETIH Awards 2026: Cambridge U. Leads in Defining Ethical AI Principles for Education

The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026, honouring excellence in global education technology, have highlighted key principles for ethical AI use in learning, with a focus on AI integration and innovative solutions. Cambridge University Press & Assessment has played a significant role in defining these principles.

The six principles for ethical AI use in education include maintaining consistent human standards, ensuring fairness, upholding data privacy, promoting transparency, involving humans, and considering sustainability. AI should enhance learning and assessment, but it cannot replace the uniquely human experience of language acquisition. For English learners, AI can bring benefits, but it must be delivered ethically with a human-centred approach.

AI-based systems must be trained on inclusive data to ensure fairness and freedom from bias. Data privacy and consent are non-negotiable, with clear information about data collection and use. Transparency and explainability are key, with learners knowing when and how AI is used. The environmental impact of AI use must also be considered for sustainability. AI systems must accurately assess language skills and deliver results people can trust.

The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 have brought these crucial ethical considerations to the forefront, guiding organisations in the responsible use of AI in education. Cambridge University Press & Assessment's new paper defines these principles, setting a standard for ethical AI integration in English language education.
