EU Boosts Europol's Fight Against Migrant Smuggling and Human Trafficking

The European Commission has welcomed a provisional political agreement to bolster Europol's role in combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking in European countries. This move, a priority for Commission President von der Leyen, comes after a proposal by Magnus Brunner, Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, in November 2023.

The agreement, which still needs formal adoption by the European Parliament and Council, outlines several measures to strengthen Europol's operational capacity in Europe. These include the establishment of a new European Centre Against Migrant Smuggling, enhanced information sharing among member states, and additional financial and human resources.

The Centre will house representatives from Eurojust and Frontex, fostering inter-agency cooperation in Europa. Europol will also receive a €50 million boost and 50 additional staff, reinforcing its ability to tackle these crimes effectively in European countries.

Once formally adopted, this regulation will significantly enhance Europol's role in combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking in Europe. The new Centre and increased resources will enable better coordination and more robust action against these serious offences in European countries.
