EU Solar Jobs to Contract in 2025, Recovery Expected by 2029
The solar industry in the EU is facing a potential slowdown in job growth, warns SolarPower Europe. Despite a 5% rise to 865,000 jobs in 2024, a contraction is expected in 2025. However, the sector is projected to recover, with total jobs reaching over 916,000 by 2029.
Germany currently leads the EU in solar employment, with 128,000 jobs. However, Italy is projected to surpass Spain in solar jobs by 2029. The operations and maintenance (O&M) sector is expected to see significant growth, with jobs rising to 12% by 2029. Meanwhile, manufacturing jobs will remain stable at around 5% of total employment. Deployment jobs, which account for 86% of EU solar jobs, are also expected to grow.
To boost solar job growth, SolarPower Europe recommends that the EU implement supportive policies. These include streamlined permitting processes, increased investments in solar manufacturing, enhanced workforce training programs, and stronger financial incentives. The organisation also expects decommissioning and recycling jobs to double to 2.9% by 2029.
While the EU solar industry faces a temporary setback in job growth, it is expected to recover and create more jobs by 2029. To ensure this growth, SolarPower Europe urges EU leaders to implement supportive policies that will boost the sector and create more employment opportunities.
