Expanding Technical Education in Agricultural Fields
In a significant move towards the future of agriculture, the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas, and Consumer Protection has announced plans to drive the development of agricultural vocational schools in the coming year. On February 2, 2023, Minister Peter Hauk made this announcement in Stuttgart.
At the heart of these plans is the modernization of the German Institute for Agricultural Engineering (DEULA) in Kirchheim/Teck. The institute will be upgraded to support inter-company training, a move that is backed by Minister Hauk and receives support from the state, with around 2.5 million euros and ten positions allocated in the 2023 budget.
The Ministry's aim is not just to expand supplementary vocational school offerings, but also to make ecological farming an equally important component alongside conventional farming in vocational school teaching. This shift towards sustainability reflects the driving factors of climate protection, biodiversity protection, regional marketing, renewable energy generation, animal welfare, structural change, specialization, and digitization in the further development of vocational schools in the agricultural sector.
In addition to the modernization of DEULA, the vocational school locations in Emmendingen, Kupferzell, and the Cluster Oberschwaben will be expanded and strengthened. These locations will serve as hubs for the education of specialists and leaders in the agricultural sector.
Minister Hauk emphasized the importance of on-site farms for children and young people to understand the origin, production, and processing of food. To this end, the project 'Creating Transparency from Producer to Counter in the Learning Site Farm' aims to make farm and garden production tangible for school classes and youth groups.
The Ministry is also working to promote inter-company cooperation and develop digital teaching and learning offerings. This includes a cooperation with the Agricultural Center Aulendorf to support the degree program in agricultural economics at the Dual University Ravensburg.
These initiatives aim to equip the future generation with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the challenges and opportunities in the agricultural sector, ensuring a sustainable and resilient food production system for Baden-Württemberg and beyond.
