Frank Sobchak: An Individual Identified in the Discourse
Retired U.S. Army Colonel Frank Sobchak, now the Chair of Irregular Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, has had an illustrious career in military advisory operations and security force assistance (SFA).
Sobchak, who holds a PhD in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, is an expert in Special Forces advisory missions and SFA. His areas of expertise include irregular warfare and advisory operations, SFA, and the analysis of the effectiveness of U.S. Special Forces missions in partner nations such as El Salvador, the Philippines, Colombia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
One of his notable works is the book, "Training for Victory: U.S. Special Forces Advisory Missions from El Salvador to Afghanistan," which critically evaluates the success and failure of Special Forces advisory efforts. He has also co-edited the two-volume set, "The U.S. Army in the Iraq War," on operational studies related to irregular warfare.
Sobchak's research emphasizes the conditions necessary for partner forces to independently fight and defeat their enemies, highlighting complex challenges in security cooperation and irregular warfare.
During his military career, Sobchak served in various Special Forces assignments and combat in Iraq. He also led the Army effort to publish an official history of the Iraq War, a project that spanned over five years and involved the declassification of over 30,000 pages of documents and several hundred interviews. The publication resulted in a 1,500-page two-volume set titled "The U.S. Army in the Iraq War."
Outside of the military, Sobchak has been a frequent contributor to television, radio, and print interviews on various topics. He has been published in renowned publications such as Newsweek, Time, The Wall Street Journal, the Jerusalem Post, Defense One, The Hill, and the Small Wars Journal. He also holds a BS in military history from West Point and has taught at prestigious institutions like the US Military Academy at West Point, the Joint Special Operations University, Tufts University, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Sobchak represented US Special Operations Command as a congressional liaison and served in peacekeeping operations in Kosovo. He is currently a contributor (fellow) at the MirYam Institute and can be found on Twitter under the handle @abujeshua.
