Fundamentals of Persona Creation for Manga and Comic Books

Get ready for an exciting opportunity for young adults and aspiring manga artists! A workshop led by MinoMiyabi, a renowned Los Angeles-based animator and illustrator, is set to offer fundamental tutorials on refining character design.

MinoMiyabi, who holds an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, is known for his focus on a balance of aesthetics and consistent character communication. He emphasizes the importance of developing character designs that clearly express the character’s personality, background, and role in the story through visual elements.

In this workshop, you'll learn techniques to create distinct silhouettes, use facial expressions, posture, and costume details that reflect emotions and traits, ensure the character’s design evolves with their narrative arc, and balance originality with readability. This approach helps deepen the emotional connection between the reader and the characters in manga.

Moreover, the $10 registration fee includes drawing material, making it an affordable opportunity for aspiring artists.

The workshop will also incorporate professional techniques to communicate expressions and feelings in character design, and will be accompanied by a post-workshop curator-led exhibition walkthrough, providing participants with valuable insights into the process and techniques used by manga artist Naoki Urasawa in his character development.

Naoki Urasawa, an internationally acclaimed Japanese artist, will have his works showcased in the exhibition, 'This is MANGA - the Art of NAOKI URASAWA'. The exhibition, which will be displayed in its gallery from January 23 - March 28, features more than 400 original drawings and storyboards from Urasawa's major works.

Urasawa's major works included in the exhibition are YAWARA!, MONSTER, 20th Century Boys, PLUTO, BILLY BAT, MASTER KEATON ReMASTER (Story by Takashi Nagasaki), and MUJIRUSHI (The Sign of Dreams, with the cooperation of Fujio Productions).

MinoMiyabi has worked as an artist/animator at SPRITE Animation Studios and has freelanced for clients such as Walt Disney Imagineering and Shinca Entertainment. He is also a regular speaker at annual workshops on character design and manga drawing at Anime EXPO (Los Angeles) and Comic-Con International (San Diego).

The workshop is part of a series and does not specify the exact date or location. Registration for the workshops is recommended for those 15 and above, with minors under 18 requiring adult accompaniment. Participants will gain the opportunity to nurture their own drawing skills and connect with the manga art form.
