G9 transition is underway, according to both circles and the IHK: "Prepare and embark on the journey now!"
Rhein-Kreis Neuss is witnessing a surge in interest for company-based training positions, with 2,521 individuals registering for the current vocational guidance year (as of July 1, 2025). However, a decrease in available training positions has left 1,069 individuals without a position, according to the employment agency.
The district-wide initiative, zdi network Rhein-Kreis Neuss, also known as "Future through Innovation", is spearheading efforts to bridge this gap. The network, which focuses on career- and study-oriented measures in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (MINT), invites school representatives for presentations about occupational images, areas of activity, access requirements, and application procedures.
Despite not being directly involved in recruitment services for trainees, the zdi network is playing a crucial role in fostering awareness and understanding about MINT careers. This is in contrast to the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein, which offers services such as the "Passgenaue Besetzung" advisors to help companies and young people find each other, and the IHK's "Ausbildungsbotschafter" initiative, where trainees and dual students report about their professions in general schools.
The IHK Managing Director, Jürgen Steinmetz, is advocating for more focus on dual training, and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district administration and local educational institutions are being called upon to strengthen apprenticeship opportunities and align training capacities accordingly. This includes collaboration with regional companies and organizations to compensate for the expected gaps in the high school graduate cohorts by 2026.
The appeal for more training places is due to the switch from G8 to G9 next year, which is expected to result in significantly fewer applicants for training in 2026. This represents a decrease of 74 training positions compared to the same time last year. However, the training market currently offers broad opportunities across all sectors, as shown by figures from the Federal Employment Agency.
To further bridge the gap, the IHK is organizing events such as "Check In Berufswelt" and trainee speed datings to connect young people with companies. The initiative "Wirtschaft pro Schule" also allows schools to arrange school visit dates with training companies from various industries.
The Rhein-Kreis Neuss is involved in career orientation with initiatives like "No final exam without a follow-up" (KAoA) and "Wirtschaft pro Schule". The Municipal Coordination Office in Rhein-Kreis Neuss coordinates the implementation of the KAoA locally.
Despite the current imbalance, the zdi network Rhein-Kreis Neuss remains committed to its mission of promoting MINT careers and fostering a skilled workforce for the future. With the support of local partners, the district aims to continue providing opportunities for young people to pursue successful careers in these fields.
