Government Shutdown Delays University Visa Services
The ongoing federal government shutdown is causing some disruptions to university services. While student aid and postal services remain unaffected, visa applications and employment certifications face delays.
The Department of Labor's shutdown has halted the certification of Labor Condition Applications (LCAs). This pause impacts H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visa applications, causing delays for international students and faculty. LCAs can typically be submitted up to six months before employment begins, but the current situation may extend this timeline.
In other news, students are urged to submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) documents promptly to avoid any potential delays in processing. Meanwhile, Pell Grants, student financial aid awards, and Veterans Affairs services continue uninterrupted.
To end the shutdown, a plan to extend federal funding must gain approval from the Senate with at least 60 votes and the House with a simple majority. Until then, visa applicants and those awaiting LCA certification should expect delays. Other services, such as postal deliveries and Amtrak train schedules, remain unaffected.
