Heidelberg University Launches CAS in Gender & Queer Studies
The University of Heidelberg is launching a new Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Gender & Queer Studies, beginning in the winter semester of 2025/2026. This four-semester program, under the heiSKILLS umbrella, aims to equip students with the tools to apply Gender & Queer Studies approaches to diverse topics and recognise discrimination mechanisms. Notably, it connects academic learning with practical experience through an internship component.
The CAS Gender & Queer Studies is open to master's students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines. It will be taught by lecturers from various departments, including sociology, medicine, history, and political science. The focus will be on exploring gender relationships, concepts of gender, body, and sexuality. Students will have the opportunity to apply their learning in a professionally qualifying internship in a thematically related field.
The internship component uniquely connects science and civil society action fields. While the specific organisations and companies participating as internship partners are not explicitly listed, similar programs at other institutions have included queer youth centres, museums like the Schwule Museum, and organisations such as GLADT. In the region of Heidelberg, the Office for Equal Opportunities of the City of Heidelberg and UNIFY are among those offering internship places.
Applications for participation in the CAS Gender & Queer Studies in the winter semester 2025/2026 are still open. This program offers students a chance to deepen their understanding of gender and queer studies, gain practical experience, and contribute to civil society. It is an exciting addition to the academic landscape at the University of Heidelberg.
