Heidelberg University Launches Certificate in Gender & Queer Studies

The University of Heidelberg is expanding its offerings this winter semester with the introduction of a Certificate in Gender & Queer Studies. Students can now apply for this four-semester program, which aims to equip them with theoretical and methodological approaches to various topics through a gender and queer studies lens. Additionally, applications are still open for the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Gender & Queer Studies, which includes a professionally qualifying internship in a thematically related field.

The CAS program is designed to enable students to apply their learning in a practical setting. Organizations and companies in the region, such as the Office for Equal Opportunities of the City of Heidelberg and UNIFY, have offered internship places in the past. However, specific details about internship locations and organizations for the upcoming winter semester are not yet available.

The new certificate program, starting in the winter semester 2025/2026, is open to master's students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines. It is offered as part of the heiSKILLS program and was created in cooperation with the Gender & Queer Network at the University of Heidelberg. Participants can expect to recognize discrimination mechanisms and treat and communicate gender-related questions interdisciplinary. The focus of the program is on gender relationships, concepts of gender, body, and sexuality.

The University of Heidelberg is committed to providing students with a well-rounded education that includes a deep understanding of gender and queer studies. With the introduction of the Certificate in Gender & Queer Studies and the CAS program, students have the opportunity to gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in this field. Applications for the CAS program are still open, and details about the certificate program will be available closer to the start of the 2025/2026 winter semester.
