MIT Honours Outstanding Staff Members at 2025 Excellence Awards

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrated its annual Excellence Awards on Thursday, 5th June, in a ceremony held at Kresge Auditorium. The event honoured 11 individuals and 4 teams for their exceptional contributions to the Institute in various categories, including Bringing Out the Best, Embracing Inclusion, and Innovative Solutions.

Among the recipients were Timothy Collard, Whitney Cornforth, Roger Khazan, Denise Phillips, Ari Jacobovits, and Stephanie Tran, along with the MIT Health Rebranding Team. The awards are the Institute's highest recognition for staff members, acknowledging their significant contributions to MIT.

In addition to the Excellence Awards, the Collier Medal, the Staff Award for Distinction in Service, and the Gordon Y. Billard Award were also presented. The Collier Medal honours the memory of Officer Sean Collier, who lost his life protecting and serving MIT. It recognises individuals or groups whose actions demonstrate the importance of community and contributions that go beyond their professional duties.

The Staff Award for Distinction in Service is given to an individual whose service results in a positive, lasting impact on the MIT community. The Gordon Y. Billard Award is presented to staff, faculty, or MIT-affiliated individuals for special service of outstanding merit performed for the Institute. Although the specific recipients of these awards were not individually named, they were awarded alongside the Excellence Awards.

As the honorees took to the stage, their colleagues cheered for them, holding brightly colored signs and pompoms, celebrating their achievements. The ceremony was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the MIT community, and a reminder of the Institute's commitment to recognising and celebrating its outstanding staff members.

Faculty members at MIT received recognition through the Collier Medal, an award that honors exceptional individuals or groups whose actions reflect the importance of community and extend beyond their professional duties.

The Education-and-self-development category of the Excellence Awards at MIT, which aims to celebrate innovative learning and personal growth initiatives, has yet to be announced, but anticipation is high for the inspiring faculty and staff members who will be honored.
