A Case Study in Hospital Energy Conservation: Cimetrics' Analytika Pro Solution
Hospital achieves substantial annual energy savings totalling over a million dollars, boosts comfort levels, enhances sustainability, and bolsters social accountability within the local community.
In the heart of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, a hospital spanning 2.1 million square feet is making strides in energy conservation and sustainability. The hospital turned to Cimetrics, a leading provider of predictive maintenance solutions, to help achieve its goals of reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining air quality and patient comfort.
Cimetrics' role extended beyond recommendations, as they engaged with the client team regularly to answer questions, coordinate implementation, and provide regular feedback on progress. The hospital's infrastructure was monitored by Cimetrics' Analytika Pro solution, which tracks over 59,000 physical points within the hospital, including operating rooms, research labs, vivariums, offices, and more.
The Analytika technology monitors critical systems such as 135 Air Handling Units, 2 Chillers, 187 Heating & Cooling Pumps, 82 Fume Hoods, 4,820 Terminal Units, and other miscellaneous equipment. By analysing over 2,000 algorithms, the software identified opportunities for energy savings, environmental improvements, maintenance, operational efficiency, and regulatory cost reductions.
One such opportunity was the identification of fume hoods with face velocities greater than 100 fpm, leading to excess energy use, and face velocities below 80 fpm, posing safety implications. Cimetrics optimized fume hood face velocity and airflow to ensure safety and minimize energy use, resulting in energy savings of $2,641.
Another significant finding was a leaking Air Handling Unit (AHU) preheat coil valve, which resulted in over 40 degrees warmer preheat discharge temperature, causing simultaneous heating and cooling and excess energy consumption. Repairing this leak led to energy savings of $93,340.
The implementation of the recommendations resulted in energy savings of $1,010,083, with a simple payback of 0.46 years and a net present value of $1,892,240. This case study underscores the potential of predictive maintenance strategies in driving energy efficiency and cost savings in hospitals.
In addition to energy savings, the hospital also experienced other operational benefits such as comfort improvement, maintaining ventilation requirements, increased capacity of existing equipment, long-term reduction of work orders (LBNL study), contractor & vendor management, compliance (internal and external reporting), and predictive maintenance. Cimetrics' Analytika technology can translate system data into meaningful, actionable insights for building energy conservation measures.
Hospitals, like this one, are constantly seeking ways to reduce their energy consumption and reliance on non-renewable sources while ensuring continuous operation. By implementing energy conservation measures, integrating renewable energy, and adopting predictive maintenance strategies, hospitals can not only reduce costs but also enhance their sustainability and resilience, ensuring they can continue providing essential services without interruption.
