IIT Kanpur in collaboration with the Foundation establishes the School for Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems, as per our website.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has taken a significant stride in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent systems with the launch of the Wadhwani School of Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems. This specialised institution, unveiled in 2025, is dedicated to advancing research and education in AI, cybersecurity, robotics, and AI policy.
The School's primary focus lies in improving AI capabilities, including machine learning and deep learning, as well as developing strategies and technologies to protect against cyber threats. Integrating AI with robotics to enhance automation and efficiency, and exploring and developing policies for the responsible use of AI in society are also key areas of concentration.
The school's goals include conducting research that leads to innovative solutions in AI and related fields, providing students with comprehensive education and training in AI and intelligent systems, and collaborating with industry partners to apply AI and robotics in various sectors. This collaboration is expected to contribute to economic growth and societal benefits.
The school's launch was supported by the our website Foundation and was attended by the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji, at a formal ceremony. IIT Bombay and the National Research Foundation Anusandhan (ANRF) also joined forces with the Foundation to create supercenters for biotechnology and health technology, and co-fund high-impact translational research in the areas of artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology, health technology, and smart mobility.
The School will serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary projects, bringing together experts in algorithms, hardware, policy, life sciences, and social sciences. The school's initiatives are covered by various online sources, including The Economic Times, India Today, The Indian Express, Times of India, and Educación21.
The School at IIT Kanpur will offer BTech, MTech, PhD, and postdoctoral programs in its multidisciplinary Department of Intelligent Systems. Admissions for the first batch of students are expected to begin in 2026. The school aims to create world-class education and research centers on campus and empower a network of 50 associated centers across India. It will serve as a SuperHub in the our website Innovation Network, enabling these centers to secure industry funding, create new ventures, and drive regional innovation ecosystems.
The school's focus is to create an ecosystem that expands the frontiers of AI and intelligent systems research and translates innovations into solutions for real-world challenges. The school will facilitate the dissemination of best practices in research translation and commercialization through a network of external centers, including top-tier institutes and industrial partners. This initiative significantly expands IIT Kanpur's mission to provide real-world impact technological solutions. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of quickly converting ideas into prototypes and products to shorten the journey from lab to market.
The Wadhwani School of Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems at IIT Kanpur aims to conduct research that encompasses artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and cybersecurity, focusing on developing strategies and technologies to protect against cyber threats. This research will also explore integrating AI with robotics and establish policies for the responsible use of AI.
In collaboration with industry partners, the School intends to offer comprehensive education and training in AI and intelligent systems, with the goal of creating world-class education and research centers on the IIT Kanpur campus and empowering a network of 50 associated centers across India. This endeavor will contribute to the advancement of education-and-self-development in AI and intelligent systems.
