Increased accommodation for additional students

The Catholic Elementary School on Essener Street is currently undergoing a significant renovation, a project that has seen the creation of new facilities, modernized administrative rooms, and the expansion of existing spaces. This expansion was carried out during ongoing school operations, a testament to the city's efficiency and targeted approach to school construction.

Mayor Thomas Geisel commented on the project, stating that 241 students can look forward to new classrooms. The school is now equipped to support a continuous three-shift operation for the coming years.

The renovation has also focused on enhancing the school's accessibility. Four additional classrooms were created by raising the saddle roof of the main and annex buildings. An elevator has been constructed as part of the school's renovation, and an accessible restroom has been implemented. These additions have significantly improved the school's accessibility, ensuring barrier-free access to the building.

The annex staircase was expanded to the attic, creating a continuous second escape route. New classrooms, a teacher's workroom, an event room, and storage space were set up in the attic of the main building. Two separate multi-purpose rooms were created on the third floor by raising the roof and subsequent new construction.

City Director and School Department Head Burkhard Hintzsche commented on the school expansion and modernization, praising the example given by the Essener Street school. The school's renovation demonstrates how school expansions can be implemented within existing building footprints.

The school is now a media pass school, focusing on responsible and conscientious handling of social and modern media. Fourth graders who have achieved media competencies receive a media pass to further encourage their learning and engagement with media.

The expansion and modernization of the school are in response to increasing student numbers in Derendorf and Pempelfort. The school facilities were updated to accommodate the growing student population, ensuring a comfortable and productive learning environment for all students.
