LACMA's New Austrian Expressionism Gift: First Klimt & Schiele Paintings
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has announced a significant donation from the Otto Kallir family. The gift, comprising over 100 Austrian Expressionist artworks, includes LACMA's first paintings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. This comes just two months after the museum received its first Vincent van Gogh and Édouard Manet paintings from the Pearlman Foundation.
The Kallir family's donation is set to greatly enrich LACMA's collection of Austrian Expressionism. Among the works are paintings, drawings, prints, and posters from renowned artists such as Richard Gerstl, Alfred Kubin, Oskar Kokoschka, Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, Lovis Corinth, and Käthe Kollwitz. The gift also includes works on paper, which will be housed in LACMA's Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies.
Stephanie Barron, LACMA's senior curator and head of modern art, has spent decades building her expertise in German Expressionism. She will oversee the integration of these new works into LACMA's collection. The museum plans to showcase a selection of these artworks in an exhibition titled 'Austrian Expressionism and Otto Kallir', opening on November 23, 2023, and running through May 31, 2026.
This generous donation from the Kallir family transforms LACMA's collection and establishes Los Angeles as a major center for Schiele scholarship. The museum looks forward to sharing these remarkable works with the public in the upcoming exhibition.
