Leaving Behind: A Sentimental Lookback at the Impact of Research Narratives

In the heart of education lies a story, a narrative that shapes our understanding and leaves an indelible mark. For Kavi Jain, this story came from The Echo Foundation, a non-profit organisation co-founded in 1987 by Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel and Stephanie Ansaldo. The primary goal of The Echo Foundation is to serve humanity through education.

One of The Echo Foundation's most impactful programs is the Footsteps Global Initiative (FGI). This unique study and travel program offers high school student ambassadors the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, learning through direct engagement and observation. The FGI takes participants to places of humanitarian need around the globe, providing them with experiences that extend beyond textbook knowledge.

During her 2008 and 2010 FGI trips to Rwanda, Stephanie, the president of The Echo Foundation, and the ambassadors learned about Rwandan history, culture, politics, and the education system. These experiences likely involved walking "where footprints fade," connecting with communities, and gaining understanding beyond the classroom.

One such experience had a significant impact on Kavi Jain. During her trip, Stephanie encountered a woman who was caring for a sick child whose parents had gone missing. This story resonated deeply with Kavi, serving as a reminder of the importance of the stories behind research projects and experiences.

Kavi's connection with The Echo Foundation did not end with her internship. At the conclusion of her time with the organisation, she received a hand-made Rwandan lidded mini-basket as a gift from Stephanie. Years later, while packing for summer, Kavi found the basket, a tangible reminder of the impactful experiences and lessons learned during her time with The Echo Foundation.

The Footsteps Global Initiative emphasises powerful lessons gained through firsthand exposure, suggesting that participants encounter meaningful cultural, social, or environmental insights that shape their perspectives. These experiences likely foster empathy and global awareness, making the students more sensitive to the needs of the world and more committed to making a difference.
