Millions of Children at Risk in Sudan and South Sudan's Humanitarian Crises

Sudan and South Sudan face severe humanitarian crises and ongoing conflicts, with millions of children and civilians at risk. The United Nations and local organizations express grave concern over escalating violence, malnutrition, and displacement.

In Sudan, over 770,000 children are estimated to be severely malnourished, with around 130,000 in critical condition. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights labels the situation in Darfur 'catastrophic', with a surge in civilian casualties and widespread atrocities. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) stand accused of grave violations, including killing, torture, and sexual violence against women and girls. Women-led organizations, vital for recovery and peacebuilding, are marginalized in decision-making processes. Clashes between the RSF and SAF in North Kordofan have resulted in strategic locations being captured by the SAF. Allegedly, Colombian mercenaries, recruited by UAE-based private security companies, have fought on behalf of the RSF. Both forces have targeted civilian infrastructure, including food systems and humanitarian facilities.

In South Sudan, an inter-ministerial meeting addressed the ongoing cholera outbreak and challenges posed by the rainy season. Severe flooding in Ayod County, Jonglei State, has displaced approximately 50,000 individuals, leaving them without essential resources. UN peacekeepers were ambushed during a routine patrol, though no injuries were reported.

The dire situations in Sudan and South Sudan require immediate international attention. Humanitarian aid and political pressure are crucial to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of millions of civilians, particularly children and women.
