MIT appoints Martin Schmidt to manage its external industry collaborations.
Martin Schmidt, a distinguished MIT professor of electrical engineering and associate provost, has been appointed to lead the Technology Licensing Office (TLO) and the Office of Corporate Relations (OCR) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Schmidt, who has been a faculty member in MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 1988, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is an inventor on over 30 U.S. patents and the co-author of over 80 journal publications and 120 peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
In his new position, Schmidt will oversee MIT’s intellectual property management, technology transfer processes, corporate partnerships, and collaborations designed to facilitate the commercialization of MIT innovations and strengthen relationships with industry partners.
The TLO, a crucial part of MIT's innovation ecosystem, manages the patenting, licensing, trademarking, and copyrighting of intellectual property developed at MIT. It plays a vital role in licensing MIT technologies to companies and supporting the startup ecosystem.
On the other hand, the OCR focuses on fostering corporate research alliances and partnerships. It works to build relationships between companies and MIT, aiming to create collaborative opportunities that benefit both parties.
Schmidt has a strong background in technology commercialization and innovation. He has experience as a manufacturing entrepreneur and consults with industry in the commercialization of technology. He is also a co-founder of several companies that are commercializing products enabled by microelectromechanical systems.
Recently, Schmidt served as the faculty lead in the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, a White House-led task force. This experience will undoubtedly prove valuable in his new role, as he works to promote and facilitate the commercialization of MIT's groundbreaking research.
