Our Botanical Art School program, spearheaded by renowned botanical artist and illustrator Ruth Wharrier, provides a unique learning opportunity to delve into this enchanting art form. This program is proudly integrated within the serene atmosphere of the Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve.
The curriculum includes Botanical Art courses at Levels 2 and 3, quality-endorsed by AIM Qualifications, in addition to seasonal leisure learning workshops. For those who complete Level 3 and crave more, we can tailor a bespoke Level 4 course to fuel your passion.

Meet Ruth Wharrier, Your Art Guide
Born in the North East of England, Ruth initially studied English at Newcastle University before venturing into adult and primary education. However, her true calling lied in Natural History painting, illustration, and tuition.
In 2008, she graduated with the prestigious Diploma in Botanical Illustration from the Chelsea Physic Garden in London. Since then, Ruth has flourished as a freelance Botanical and Natural History illustrator, creating stunning works in watercolour, gouache, etching, and pen & ink from her Pakefield studio.
Since 2011, Ruth has led the Botanical Art School at Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Level 2 Botanical Drawing
Dreaming of a creative adventure? This course caters to drawing enthusiasts looking to embark or elevate their journey as a botanical artist. Spanning 5 days over three months, this course consists of six modules:
- The Basics: Understanding Tone & Form
- Observing the Leafy Greens: Drawing from Observation
- Exploring Structure: Key Shapes Part 1
- Exploring Structure: Key Shapes Part 2
- Embracing Color: Graphite & Watercolors
- Embracing Color: Pen & Ink & Watercolors
The tuition fee is £685.
Level 3 Botanical Drawing
Ready for a creative challenge? This advanced course focuses on developing drawing, painting skills, and understanding of plant ecology and the natural surroundings. Over a 6-month period, you’ll benefit from 12 days of dedicated guidance with emphasis on:
- Botanical Drawing & Painting Techniques
- Composition & Aesthetics
- Botany & Field Skills
- Historical Insights
The cost for this intriguing journey is £1,500.
