Breaking Down Barriers: Female Apprenticeship Growth in Trades Boosts Saxony's Workforce

Confirmed Apprenticeships for Craft Trades Total Over 2,200 for the Upcoming Training Year - Nearly 2,200 vocational training programs are being prepared for the upcoming academic term

The upcoming training year in Saxony is gearing up for a 6% surge in new apprenticeship contracts, with over 2,264 agreements secured as of May. This surge indicates a thriving interest in careers in the trades among young people, making them critical to the region's competitive edge, according to Frank Wetzel, president of the Saxon Trade Association.

Interestingly, more than one-fifth of the newly signed contracts involve young women, who tend to lean towards careers in hairdressing, optometry, dentistry, audiology, and retail food sectors. However, there's an impressive uptick in female interest in traditionally male-dominated fields such as automotive mechatronics, electronics, and roofing.

The trends indicate a growing preference for apprenticeships in automotive sales, food retail, butchery, baking, and roofing, over the next few years. In line with recent years, automotive mechatronics, electronics, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning mechanics continue to be popular choices.

As we move towards the final months before the training year, the trades are actively seeking last-minute applicants, primarily high school graduates and dropouts, to fill the numerous vacancies across about 80 professions. There are approximately 400 positions yet to be filled, with openings in the automotive, metal construction, carpentry, masonry, refrigeration technology, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning trades.

Germany, as a whole, is spearheading initiatives to bridge the gender gap in vocational training, particularly in the technical and skilled trades that have traditionally seen fewer women. Nationwide, campaigns like Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day aim to challenge traditional stereotypes and encourage more young women to pursue technical and trade apprenticeships. This effort forms part of broader federal plans aimed at boosting vocational training and addressing labor shortages in skilled trades by broadening recruitment demographics.

As the labor market enthusiasm for skilled trades, digitalization, and renewable energy sectors continues to grow, it's likely that apprenticeship opportunities, including for women, will expand in Saxony and beyond. However, specific figures for female apprenticeship growth in Saxony's upcoming training year are yet to be confirmed. Keep an eye out for updates as we move closer to the start of the new training year!
