New Publication: "Woven Yarns of Vidarbha" Revels Region's Textile Legacy in Coffee Table Format
The Weavers Service Centre, Nagpur, in collaboration with designer Shruti Sancheti, has launched a new coffee table book titled "Threaded Tales of Vidarbha". This publication aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the artistry and stories woven into every thread of the Vidarbha region's traditional textiles.
The book showcases the understated elegance of traditional Vidarbha textiles, featuring textiles such as tussar silk and fine cotton sarees, with design elements rooted in local customs. It documents the distinctive handloom traditions and motifs of the Vidarbha region, offering a detailed depiction of these unique elements.
The book includes original research, photographs, and testimonies from local weavers like Prahlad Katwe and Rajesh Lade, who share personal insights into their craft. It is expected to serve as a reference for designers, researchers, policymakers, and craft enthusiasts.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Hon'ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, conveyed his appreciation for the book, noting that it is a valuable effort to document and showcase the beauty of Vidarbha's handwoven textiles, intricate designs, and traditional motifs to a wider audience.
Dr. M. Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), described the publication as a "visual and cultural tribute to the extraordinary textile traditions of the Vidarbha region." The book will be made available through official handloom channels.
By acting as a reference source for handloom channels and craft preservation efforts, enhancing visibility and appreciation of Vidarbha’s lesser-known weaving region, and supporting the continuity and revival of traditional crafts, "Threaded Tales of Vidarbha" aims to safeguard the handloom heritage of Vidarbha, ensuring its stories and crafts remain alive for future generations.
The new coffee table book, "Threaded Tales of Vidarbha", will not only cater to the educational and self-development needs of readers interested in the craft and history of handloom textiles, but also provide a delightful addition to any fashion-and-beauty-conscious individual's lifestyle with its captivating visuals of traditional sarees and design elements. For those passionate about home-and-garden decor, the book's unique depiction of the region's handloom traditions may inspire new design ideas. Moreover, bookworms will appreciate the book's comprehensive research and firsthand testimonies from local weavers, making "Threaded Tales of Vidarbha" an engaging read in the entertainment category too.
