Newcomer trainees are warmly received by Magdeburg City Council
In the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, Magdeburg city administration and municipal enterprises continue to uphold the nation's rich tradition of vocational training. This practice, which combines practical work and theoretical education, is often regulated by public administration standards, preparing young people for careers in public service and associated municipal sectors.
Currently, Magdeburg's city administration and city-owned enterprises offer a variety of recognized training positions. These include administrative assistant apprenticeships (Verwaltungsfachangestellte), technical and craft apprenticeships in municipal enterprises, specialized trainee programs for public service roles, training in public safety and emergency services, and more.
The administrative assistant training equips individuals to work within city administration offices in areas such as citizen services, finance, and urban planning. Meanwhile, technical and craft apprenticeships cover utilities, waste management, building maintenance, and public infrastructure. Specialized trainee programs cater to areas like social services, urban development, and IT support within the city administration or affiliated city enterprises.
Training in public safety and emergency services prepares trainees for roles in emergency management or local police services, given the municipal scope. The training programs aim to equip apprentices with the practical skills and knowledge required for municipal functions, ensuring succession planning and professionalism in city governance and service delivery.
Recently, a total of 420 individuals applied for these training positions in Magdeburg. As of now, there are 154 men and women in training. The number of planned training positions in Magdeburg's city administration and municipal enterprises has remained constant for many years.
The ceremonial opening of the training year took place in the Old Town Hall, with Magdeburg's mayor, Simone Borris, welcoming 51 new trainees and students in the city administration. The trainers introduced themselves after the mayor's welcome, and a group photo was taken in front of the Old Town Hall.
Mayor Borris expressed the city's commitment to providing attractive training conditions to encourage trainees to continue their professional path in the Magdeburg city administration after successful completion. The trainees will work in 11 different areas, including administrative assistants, media and information service specialists, surveying technicians, street cleaners, bathing operation specialists, environmental technology specialists, gardeners, animal caretakers, and city secretaries.
Seven students also began a dual study program in public administration, three in administrative digitization and informatics, and one in surveying and geoinformatics. Magdeburg wishes its new trainees success and joy in their vocational training.
