Park University in Spotlight: Housing Summit, ICM Concert Season, and Athletic Achievements

Park University continues to make headlines, with a diverse range of events, achievements, and recognitions taking place both on and off campus.

On the academic front, Matt Harris, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, was interviewed on KMBZ-FM in Kansas City on Sept. 20 regarding the U.S. House of Representatives Kansas 3rd District race, and on Sept. 30 about Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly's run for a second term. Harris was also interviewed for a story that aired on KMBC-TV in Kansas City on Sept. 20 related to National Voter Registration Day.

In the realm of research, Kathy Howe, Ph.D., assistant professor of literacy education and director of the Watson Literacy Center, co-authored the article "Teacher Educators' Beliefs, Self-Efficacy and Perceptions Related to Dyslexia: Phase I" that appeared in a recent edition of the journal Literacy Practice and Research. Ho-Seop Cha, Ph.D. (assistant professor of geography) and Kathy Taylor, J.D. (director of adjunct faculty orientation and mentoring), provided comments for the recently published book Best Practices for Mentoring in Online Programs: Supporting Faculty and Students in Higher Education.

Academic accolades extend to Park University's ranking by Military Times on its 2022 Best for Vets: Colleges rankings, and inclusion in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges 2023" rankings.

Moving towards community engagement, Park University will host a housing insecurity summit on October 19, focusing on the Northland area. The event will be held in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel and will also be available via livestream.

In the world of arts, Park University's International Center for Music (ICM) has announced its 2022-23 concert season, featuring 11 concerts from September 2022 through May 2023. Highlights include a concert of classical music by female composers titled "HERS" on September 5, led by violist Molly Carr and pianist Anna Petrova. The season will conclude on May 1, 2023, with pianist and ICM artist-in-residence Behzod Abduraimov.

Athletically, 86 student-athletes from the Parkville Campus were recognized as Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Fifteen Park University athletic programs were honored as an NAIA Scholar Team, with the women's volleyball team boasting a combined grade point average of 3.55, while the women's cross country team had a 3.46 combined GPA.

Outside of Park University, alumnus Joseph Geeter III, '99, was featured for his work with the Montford Point Marines, and Merideth Rose, '06, MPA '08, a member of Park University's Civic Advisory Council, was recognised for her volunteer work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
