Over 24,000 migrants freed in San Diego over the past two months
In recent weeks, San Diego has seen a significant increase in migrant activity, following the closure of a local welcome center seven weeks ago. The center, which took in asylum-seekers after they were processed at Border Patrol stations, had to close due to a lack of county funding.
Since then, the Border Patrol has been busing asylum-seekers and dropping them off at transit centers around San Diego, particularly the Iris Avenue trolley station in South San Diego. The exact number of migrants released in San Diego since the end of February remains unclear, as the organization responsible for the figures has not made them accessible to local media. However, Supervisor Jim Desmond claims that more than 120,000 migrants have been released onto the streets of San Diego in the last six months, and over 24,000 in San Diego County since late February.
The federal government is not providing any assistance to San Diego County, according to Supervisor Desmond. This has led to concerns about the ability of local services to cope with the influx of migrants.
Meanwhile, Mexico has deployed troops in Playas de Tijuana to prevent migrant crossings. Yet, this has not stopped attempts to cross the border, with an individual recently apprehended by the US Military while attempting to climb the border wall.
Long lines of migrants are waiting on the Tijuana-San Diego border as Title 42, a public health order that allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants, is set to expire. This could lead to further pressure on local services in San Diego.
Elsewhere, Mexican drug cartels have been burglarizing American homes along the Texas-Tamaulipas border, while a clash in the Doctor Coss municipality of Nuevo León resulted in 12 fatalities.
As the situation continues to evolve, San Diego County residents can expect more migrant drop-offs in the coming months, according to Supervisor Desmond. The closure of the welcome center and the lack of federal assistance have raised questions about the future management of migrant activity in the region.
