Political scholar Seyla Benhabib wins the 2025 Hannah Arendt Prize for her significant contributions to political thought.

Seyla Benhabib, a renowned political philosopher, has been awarded the prestigious Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought 2025. This honour, endowed with €10,000, recognises her outstanding contributions to political thought.

Born in Istanbul in 1950, Benhabib has spent her career teaching at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, the New School for Social Research, Yale University, and conducting research at Columbia Law School in New York. Her Sephardic-Turkish heritage is an integral part of her identity, but it is her intellectual pursuits that have truly set her apart.

Benhabib's work is deeply influenced by the concept of "thinking without a banister," as articulated by Hannah Arendt. This approach allows her to tackle some of the central political challenges of our time, including migration, feminism, political belonging, and international conflicts, with nuance and depth.

In Germany, Benhabib is particularly recognised for her engagement in public debates, where she emphasises diverse perspectives and nuanced views, avoiding the risk of polarisation. Her theoretical analyses are published by Suhrkamp in Germany.

The award ceremony will take place on December 9, 2025, at Bremen City Hall. The Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought 2025 is presented by the Hannah Arendt Association for Political Thought e.V., with funding provided by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the Heinrich Böll Foundations at both the federal level and in Bremen.

The international jury for the award includes Filipp Dzyadko, Alexander Estis, Waltraud Meints-Stender (chair), Ronya Othmann, Cristina Sánchez, Facundo Vega, and Klaus Wolschner. For inquiries, you can contact [email protected].

Benhabib's unique approach, which integrates Critical Theory, feminist theory, and cosmopolitanism with Arendt’s work, has made her an influential political philosopher of the present. The international jury has honoured her as an outstanding political and philosophical intellectual.
