Modular Teaching Building Expands Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum in Bayreuth

The city of Bayreuth has taken a significant step to address the growing demand for classroom space at the Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum (GCE) by adding a modular teaching building. This new addition, which cost approximately 725,000 euros, will provide 20 new classrooms, helping the school accommodate the increasing number of students.

The modular building, previously used as a school day care center from 2021 to the end of 2024 during the renovation of the Meyernberg primary school, is currently being expanded. With a usable area of 375 square meters, it will serve as a flexible solution to space constraints, enhancing the learning environment in a timely manner.

Mayor Thomas Ebersberger expressed his satisfaction with the quick solution, stating, "I am pleased that the city of Bayreuth has been able to provide a solution for the additional classrooms." The school principal and headmaster, Franz Eisentraut, shares this sentiment, expressing his satisfaction with the progress of the work on the modular teaching building.

The ground floor of the building will include a classroom for the upper school and two rooms for the open day care center, each with an area of approximately 55 square meters. The upper floor will be dedicated to art, with two halls, each approximately 68 square meters, and an art preparation room of about 55 square meters.

Shelves with utensils for art lessons and some tables have been set up in the upper floor rooms of the modular teaching building. The connections for water and sewage, as well as the power grid, have been connected to the building.

The work on the modular teaching building is scheduled to be completed by the end of August, ensuring that it will be ready for the upcoming school year 2025/2026, during which more students than ever before are expected to attend Bayreuth's grammar schools. Mayor Ebersberger hopes that the students and teachers will feel comfortable in the rooms next school year.

In addition to the modular building, a previous setup during the Whitsun holidays included a modular teaching building with six classrooms at the GCE. The increase in students is due to a high interest from fourth-graders in switching to grammar school and the reintroduction of G9.

The planning for the modular teaching building focused on including temporary classrooms that can be used by different classes, such as the art halls. This approach allows the school to quickly and efficiently expand its facilities to meet increasing demand without requiring extensive traditional construction.

The city acquired the modular school building for approximately 725,000 euros, and the costs for the current conversion of the modular teaching building are around 400,000 euros. The cost-effective solution will undoubtedly contribute to enhancing the educational experience at the Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum in Bayreuth.

The expansion of the modular teaching building at the Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum (GCE) is not only about providing additional classroom space, but also about fostering education-and-self-development opportunities. The ground floor will host classrooms for the upper school, open day care center, and art halls, enabling a diverse range of lessons and activities that promote personal growth and learning.

With the imminent completion of the modular teaching building by the end of August, the Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum (GCE) is set to offer an improved learning environment, thereby supporting its mission of quality education-and-self-development for the upcoming school year 2025/2026.
