In the district of Herford, an innovative initiative has been launched to improve road safety for kindergarten children. As part of the European Mobility Week, the Verkehrswacht Kreis Herford has organised the Aktion der Glühvests for kindergarten children since 2017.

This year, around 1,500 bright yellow glow warning vests will be distributed to over 130 kindergartens across the district, with each three-year-old set to receive one. These vests, adorned with the district's climate protection logo, make the children highly visible, ensuring their safety while walking to and from kindergarten.

Sabine Höner zu Siederdissen, from the Mobility Management of the district of Herford, is delighted with every kindergarten that collects its vests. She is open to advising kindergartens for Mobility Week, with no limits to creativity.

The district aims to encourage children and their parents to walk to kindergarten together, even in the dark season. These journeys support climate protection and make it a matter of course for children that everyday journeys are not only made by car.

Some kindergartens have already taken up the offer for Mobility Week actions, but any other institution that joins in is also welcomed. Kindergartens that wish to carry out certain actions for Mobility Week can contact the Mobility Management of the district of Herford by email ([email protected]) or telephone (05221/13-2290).

The positive response to the glow warning vest action has resulted in a permanent action under the motto "Walking to Kindergarten". Sabine Höner zu Siederdissen is delighted with every kindergarten that collects its vests, expressing her delight, "I am thrilled to see so many institutions embracing this initiative. It's not just about road safety, but also about fostering a culture of climate-friendly travel among our youngest citizens."

The district delivers the vests to the town halls of the cities and municipalities for collection by the institutions. The district of Herford is committed to making roads safer for children and promoting climate-friendly travel habits.
